Xeriscaping

Xeriscaping is a great way to beautify your landscape while saving costly water expenses and helping our environment. Xeriscaping takes many forms. It starts with proper irrigation. Drip lines are utilized to get the correct amount of water directly to the root ball of trees and plants ensuring water is not wasted. Xeriscape can be a well laid out xeric garden, patios, walkways, attractive rock scapes with accent boulders, or even water features. Water wise landscaping is an integral part of our design process here at Mile High Landscaping.

Why Xeriscape? For most of the country over fifty percent of residential water used is applied to landscape and lawns. Xeriscape can reduce landscape water use by seventy percent or more. Effective water use doesn't mean changing our lifestyle. It means reducing water waste, such as improper irrigation, and finding ways to achieve attractive, comfortable landscapes without excess water use.

Your landscape is an investment in your comfort and in the value of your property. A good Xeriscape will increase your property value by as much as 15%. Xeriscape can also reduce water and maintenance costs by up to 60%.

Xeriscaping does not mean 'zero-scaping'. This is a great picture of an established xeric garden. There are a multitude of plants that are considered xeric that still have beautiful foliage and blossoms. Some of these plants even bloom several times during the year. Even after only three years xeric plants are considered established. There are many types of plants that are considered xeric including: evergreen shrubs, deciduous shrubs, perennials, and ground covers. This xeric planting bed is a great example of how beautiful xeriscape can be. Xeric plants come in all shapes, size, colors, and textures.
This meadow of Turkish veronica loves hot and dry climates. Installed in a full sun location up against this large rock is a great place for this xeric plant. Anytime that sod is removed a significant amount of water is saved. These pavers are a beautiful and functional alternative to sod in this small backyard. Landscaping should be irrigated with a drip irrigation system, putting water directly to the root ball of trees and plants to conserve water and to keep the plants healthy. This project has plants with interesting colors and textures but requires little water. Sometimes a separate drip line is run to all pots and annual beds to maximize water conservation.
