Wood Structures

Wood structures can be many things: decks, arbors, pergolas, gazebos, trellis, bridges, gates, entryways, or fences and have a variety of purposes. An arbor may be installed to create a sun break for the hot days here in Colorado, or a custom gateway to invite passers through into the next portion of the landscape. We have built entire stand alone structures that are buildings in themselves adding true retreats to the landscape. Most wood structures have more than one purpose. Sun break, wind break, sense of enclosure, sense of passageway, screening, and light mounting are some good examples of what wood structures can bring the landscape.

Outdoor living with all the creature comforts. This area is almost a room in itself. Close to 400 square feet of living space was created by using cinder block walls, stucco and stone. The pillars and walls help make the space more of a room than just a patio. The water feature is the focal point of the space but can be seen from the great room as well. The wood pergola adds a sense of enclosure and the nearby grill is easy to access allowing the cook to be close to their guests. Low voltage lighting and integrated audio system make this outdoor space a great place to unwind and enjoy the best of outdoor living here in Denver! In this Stapleton backyard we installed a large flagstone patio with pillars and curved seat wall. The large overhead pergola creates a beautiful shadow on the patio and helps break the sun in the hot afternoon. The spiral junipers and formal potted urns add a European feel to this patio. Arbors and pergolas are all 100% custom and can be made to accent any style landscape. This arbor has stone pillars around the base of the posts and custom cut "T" and "L" plates. These plates are used to connect the beams with the posts. Custom metal hardware can really add a unique element to any wood structure as well as structural integrity.
Custom made hardware was used as a connection piece on this Denver project. Kerf plates were used to keep the connection between the beams, joists, and fire feature clean and modern looking. Posts are four 4"x4"s equally spaced to create a void in the middle. The striking architectural feature is highlighted by the low voltage lights mounted on either side of the beam. A beautiful custom metal art plate is used as a focal point for this back patio and doubles as a privacy screen for the neighbors. Blue stone is used to create this raised flower bed and an anchor for the patio. The metal art sways gently in the breeze and plays with the beams of sunlight filtering through the piece. This large arbor really helps define the space on this deck and makes it feel much more like a room, as well as provides relief from the sun on the hot summer days. The existing deck was cut so we could fully integrate the fire place into it. Low voltage lighting fixtures are mounted in the arbor to light up the beautiful rock.
A great place to watch the sun set or have a midday snack. The gazebo in the background is a 12' x 12' cedar unit with composite flooring. We installed low voltage lighting on select posts on the outside and a switch for a light inside the gazebo. A rustic arbor can help transform a patio into an outdoor living space as well as helping screen out undesirable views. A fully covered front porch including shingles and gutters was installed on this project. An element that allows further enjoyment of this front porch and landscape even when raining or on the hottest of Denver afternoons.
This double wood gate has iron inserts mimicking grape vines to further the feel of the Tuscan design. Trellis and custom gateways are a great entrance to any landscape. Passing through a gateway is a symbolic change of mind state. We use gateways often just for this reason. Arbors can be made to fit any style. This has a nice clean style to be congruent with the interior design.
This small arbor frames the outdoor kitchen and also has down lights to accent posts and illuminate the cook top. This large arbor really makes this cozy courtyard feel much more like an outdoor room. This arbor is a good example of what is possible with woodwork. The beams on this arbor are 4
This bench was actually removed from a deck and retrofitted into the landscape. It makes for a great additional area to relax and enjoy the surrounding landscape. Bridges are another symbolic change of mind state as well as add interest. An Asian style entryway/ trellis is seen in the background. It helps tie together this informal landscape project and also frames up the mountains when viewing from inside the sauna room.
Double post detail on each side is a nice accent to this front porch. The roof structure opens the opportunity for more landscape lighting. The large arbor on this project gives a sense of enclosure to the outdoor living space. The pergola was designed with This large scale arbor makes the space feel much more like a room and adds a sense of enclosure. Overhead structures give additional lighting options. All our arbors and pergolas are custom one of a kind products.
In this landscape we installed a full gabled roof which gives both shade break and is a great place to enjoy the outdoors even when raining. The pergola with shade element reduces the direct sunlight by about 75% allowing the hot summer days to be more enjoyable. Tumbled pillars and real rock tile were selected in this project to compliment the Tuscan style of the home. The transformation was dramatic and can also be enjoyed from the inside of the house through the windows. A wood bridge was installed to serve as a transition piece between the main patio and the fire pit patio. Two lights mounted under the bridge make a glow around the edges of the bridge. A modern fence design that doubles as a screen from the neighbors can be seen in the background.
Custom metal kerf plates were fabricated to attach the beams and joists to this fire feature. The kerf plates were elected to keep a clean look at the intersection point. A burnt orange arbor cover was sewn to create 100% shade in this south facing courtyard. The shade is a 3 piece removable cover. Arbors come in all shapes and sizes. This arbor has the joists custom milled to create a slight V shape. The point of the V is 2/3rd the way back on the joist. The result is a dramatic modern look. The arbor was designed to reduce the amount of hot afternoon sun entering the home. Posts and T plates were designed to mimic the architecture on the pitched roof. A close up of the arbor on the left. The interesting and unique V shape of the joists as well as the custom cut T plates. Most custom hardware is powder coated to protect against the elements. Decking as seen on the top of the arbor is used to further reduce the amount of sunlight.
