Mile High Landscaping

Special Features

Special Features can be outdoor kitchens, fire features, water features, entryways, statue placement, monuments, trellis, or stand alone structures. These features are an opportunity to truly customize your landscape project and integrate pieces that really appeal to each client’s individual style and taste. Our designers may have suggestions of certain types of statues, iron work, or water features, but generally ask for input from our clients because these pieces are so individual and unique. Our clients have brought us special features from all over the world. We have integrated bronze statues from Vail, 6' tall Buddha statues from Viet Nam, wrought iron from England, and doors from 7th century Italy just to name a few. Some special features are custom built from the ground up, others start with a premade piece of art, statue, or water feature and are integrated it into the landscape, making it far more grand and congruent with the rest of the landscape.

Fire Places can be free standing or attached to the garage as in this landscape. It has a functioning chimney that is 14' high and adds to the grand scale of this fire feature and landscape. Landscape lighting can be seen throughout this outdoor living space and allows for enjoyment day and night. Decorative concrete has come a long way and is used in many shapes and forms. In this concrete fire pit we worked small pieces of black glass into the top of the concrete as it was drying and ground the surface later to expose the glass. Now when lit, the fire sparkles off the glass in the top of the fire pit. Outdoor living with all the creature comforts. This area is almost a room in itself. Close to 400 square feet of living space was created by using cinder block walls, stucco and stone. The pillars and walls help make the space more of a room than just a patio. The water feature is the focal point of the space but can be seen from the great room as well. The wood pergola adds a sense of enclosure and the nearby grill is easy to access allowing the cook to be close to their guests. Low voltage lighting and integrated audio system make this outdoor space a great place to unwind and enjoy the best of outdoor living here in Denver!
Landscape lighting doubles the value of any landscape. The landscape can be enjoyed during the day or night. Here a great photo of the dynamic effect of low voltage lighting in a water feature. Not only does the lighting illuminate the sheets of water, but the light dances across the top of the reservoir portion throwing this spectacle all over the walls and landscape around it. A beautiful custom metal art plate is used as a focal point for this back patio and doubles as a privacy screen for the neighbors. Blue stone is used to create this raised flower bed and an anchor for the patio. The metal art sways gently in the breeze and plays with the beams of sunlight filtering through the piece. A stainless steel grill top and side burners can perfectly sear a steak in minutes. An adjoining service bar helps keep the cook in good company and is just more fun.
An outdoor retreat is an area that is a little farther away from the main entertaining area. Away from the phone, the computer, and the day to day grind. Here the retreat is in the form of a hot tub patio, another great way to unwind and relax. Gas drives this architectural fire pit and seating area. Gas fire pits are aesthetic and soothing as well as take the chill off spring and fall nights. Over 65 tons of boulders were used to retain the steep slope in this Centennial backyard. The 4' waterfall is the focal point of this upper patio and can be seen as soon as you open the front door of the house.
This stone fireplace can burn gas or wood and makes a beautiful focal point for the main patio. Outdoor kitchens are a great way to enjoy our beautiful weather here in Colorado. This larger water feature has underwater lights that create a kinetic lightshow on the stucco behind it. A relaxing environment regardless who your company is. It also has an auto fill, and coy fish. Notice the candle windows, another finishing touch conjured up by one of our designers.
Smaller water features can be integrated into the landscape to become much more than just a free standing feature. Many of these water features can be installed with lighting to make a kinetic lightshow and even auto fills to refill the features as needed from your irrigation system. The simple but elegant Mother and Child statue is enhanced by low voltage lighting and plant material. These two patios make two distinct social areas. One has a fireplace and built in cook top, the other is an outdoor living room. Seat walls and pillars define the space and make it feel much more like a room than a patio.
This fireplace is a beautiful focal point for the deck and can be seen from the kitchen and living room. In addition, the fireplace and flagstone seat help define this space and make it much more intimate and cozy. This Washington Park Courtyard is a great example of an outdoor living space. We have outfitted this project with a stainless steel cook top, a service bar adjoining the outdoor kitchen. A gas driven fire pit and seat wall make for a cozy area to keep entertainment festive at anytime. A turned column arbor gives this courtyard a sense of enclosure and privacy. The four station remote control lighting system allow you to adjust the atmosphere for any occasion. This 6' tall Buddha statue was imported from Viet Nam. Scale is an important design aspect that is often missed. 8 tons of boulders were installed to make the scale of the boulders proportionate to the statue. Often we make special features interactive so the client can maximize the value of their art. In this case, we installed stairs so that all could rub the Buddha's belly for good luck.
Prefabricated water features come in all shapes and sizes. This more formal water feature is just a few feet away from a flagstone patio that really puts the finishing touch on this historic Congress Park home. The gazebo on the hill is a retreat from the house that has a great view of the sunset overlooking the front range. These strip stone walls serve as a beautiful architectural element in addition to retaining the steep grade. Colorado has over 300 days of sun a year, what a better way to enjoy them then by cooking outside. Outdoor kitchens are great to enjoy as well as add value to your home.
A perfect example of outdoor living here in Denver. This project includes all the elements in a dream landscape: fireplace, outdoor kitchen, water features, lighting, and plenty of living space. The entire backyard was enclosed for privacy with a masonry wall with accent pillars. The outdoor kitchen incorporates a raised, bar height area where friends and family can gather round and keep the host company while entertaining. This kitchen features a Viking cook top, warming drawer, sink, and storage areas. The large fire place is a great focal point for the living area portion of this project. A large pergola adds enclosure and makes this space feel much more like a room. Finally one large and one small water feature soothe any left over stress and fatigue of our busy lives. Enjoyable living at its finest. This custom double gate was built with wood and enhanced with custom iron work. Grape clusters and leaves are made to resemble Concord grape vines. The bottom panels were filled for privacy, and the top left open to see which guest is arriving next. This small pot style water feature is a great focal point from the dining area and has a beautiful, tranquil sound, adding to the conversation at the table, not overpowering it. An auto fill connected to the irrigation system keeps the water feature full and is low maintenance.
Water features come in many shapes and sizes. This stone water feature has 3 polished sides and 3 rough. A gentle trickling sound can be enjoyed throughout the nearby patio. Full perennial beds add to the overall effect of this feature. These clients' loved the mountains, and wanted to bring a little of into their backyard, so we used 8 tons of boulders to create this naturalistic fire pit and two benches. What a great place to gather and tell stories of adventure and travel! A kinetic sculpture in the background purchased in Taos adds movement and life to the landscape. Tumbled pillars and real rock tile were selected in this project to compliment the Tuscan style of the home. The transformation was dramatic and can also be enjoyed from the inside of the house through the windows.
Annual pots accent this water feature and add color to the hardscape. The water feature can be seen all the way through the main floor of the house and helps draw the eye away from the large garage wall. The irrigation system has a designated line specifically for the annual pots integrated into the landscape. A large pour in place concrete fire place is the unique focal point. We utilized concrete ties to add an architectural element to the feature. Large scale arbor encloses the space and helps break the hot afternoon sun. A combination of low voltage lighting and full line voltage fixtures create a dramatic effect at night. An overhead fan adds airflow and comfort for those hot midsummer days and nights. Acid finished concrete floor anchors the space and adds color. A concrete kitchen is out of this picture to the right. We can't wait to see this space with plants next spring! Privacy is created in this courtyard by the large custom water feature. Not only does it screen out the neighbors, but it is a beautiful focal point for the patio as well as the adjoining room. Seat walls make this space feel more like a room and lighting allows the space to be enjoyed late into the evening. Large pots are filled with annuals every year to create a burst of color.
