Patios

Patios are the foundation of outdoor living and the bones of the landscape. Patios can be made with a variety of materials to create different effects. A rustic flagstone patio may be situated in a far off corner of the backyard to create a cozy area away from the house, or brick paver patio may be used closer to the house for a more formalized feel. Patios can be made using many different materials including: flagstone, brick pavers, cobble stone, stamped concrete, as well as many other types of rock. Patios are the heart of any project and are where you will live and enjoy the rest of the landscape. Careful consideration is made by our designers to ensure that these spaces maximize all aspects of the landscape resulting in a truly magical experience.

A large patio connects several entertaining areas in this landscape; a large scale fire feature, an outdoor kitchen, a large scale water feature and an area for dining. Flagstone is a durable and beautiful material. Much of it harvested here in the Four Corners Area is economical as well. This North Cherry Hills home has a slightly modern feel, so we accented it with a hand troweled concrete patio and steppers. Matching brick seat walls and a full pitched roof create a patio that can be enjoyed even in the rain. Double doors going out to the main patio and another set going to the fire pit patio make a nice transition and bring the outdoors in. Decorative concrete has come a long way and is used in many shapes and forms. In this concrete fire pit we worked small pieces of black glass into the top of the concrete as it was drying and ground the surface later to expose the glass. Now when lit, the fire sparkles off the glass in the top of the fire pit.
In this Stapleton backyard we installed a large flagstone patio with pillars and curved seat wall. The large overhead pergola creates a beautiful shadow on the patio and helps break the sun in the hot afternoon. The spiral junipers and formal potted urns add a European feel to this patio. A red paver patio was chosen here to work with the architecture of the historic building. Lush plantings were used to create a sense of privacy in this front yard landscape. Further, full line voltage and low voltage lights were used to create this magical effect. This Washington Park Courtyard is a great example of an outdoor living space. There was a small but well built flagstone patio that we doubled in size, and transformed into this beautiful courtyard you see here. We designed this project with a stainless steel cook top, a service bar adjoining the outdoor kitchen. A gas driven fire pit and seat wall make for a cozy area to keep entertainment festive at anytime. A turned column arbor gives this courtyard a sense of enclosure and privacy. The four station remote control lighting system allows you to adjust the atmosphere for any occasion.
Large accent boulders are used to anchor this raised primary patio in this naturalistic landscape. Two different types of flagstone are used to create a beautiful blend of colors. A large pour in place concrete fire place is the unique focal point. We utilized concrete ties to add an architectural element to the feature. Large scale arbor encloses the space and helps break the hot afternoon sun. A combination of low voltage lighting and full line voltage fixtures create a dramatic effect at night. An overhead fan adds airflow and comfort for those hot midsummer days and nights. Acid finished concrete floor anchors the space and adds color. A concrete kitchen is out of this picture to the right. We can't wait to see this space with plants next spring! Multiple patios in the same landscape project add value by giving the client multiple places to relax and entertain. This patio is the secondary patio of this landscape project and has a 7' tall boulder retaining the steep grade change from the neighbors. The same two types of stone are used in this patio as in the primary patio.
The possibilities with patios are endless. This flagstone patio has a multiple levels, an accent color band, and a small strip stone retaining wall to add style and interest. The free standing fire place is a great touch to give this patio a cozy feel. A wide pathway is a beautiful and comfortable way to get to your home and landscape. This wet laid flagstone pathway is 10' wide and steps up to a fully covered porch. Mile High Landscaping installed the wood structure above the porch as well as the rest of the entire project. More on this project is available on our Café patios are a great way to transition from the home to an on grade patio. Many times there is a significant distance from the interior of the home to the grade in the landscape. Most homes have some sort of poured concrete steps that get you down to grade. They work, but they are not very pretty. The café patio is a great solution. Café patios are created by enlarging the landing of the stairs to make a small patio. This patio usually has seat walls to make the landing feel more cozy comfortable and safe. Then a wider, more aesthetic set of stairs bring you down into the main patio. Not only is it beautiful, but it creates an area all unto itself. A great place to stage food or drinks on the way out, or to simply kick off the shoes.
We believe that the landscape should reflect the architecture of the home. This formal courtyard is an excellent compliment to the early 1900's Highlands bungalow. The raised planter bed adds interest as well as additional seating. A shade structure overhead helps break the heat of hot summer days as well as makes this patio feel much more like an outdoor room. Dimension cut or geometrically snapped flagstone make an interesting patio as well. Dimensional stone can be laid to work in formal or informal landscapes as seen in this Asian style landscape. Patios can be made with many different materials. This rustic patio was made from moss rock rekindled from an old landscape. The adjoining pathways twist and turn their way through the large naturalistic water feature.
This paver patio is nestled in a grove of existing Aspen trees to give a great shady and secluded entertaining area even in the front yard. Large accent boulders have been used to tie in the existing landscape and double as seats. Tumbled pillars and real rock tile were selected in this project to compliment the Tuscan style of the home. The transformation was dramatic and can also be enjoyed from the inside of the house through the windows. These patios make two distinct social areas. One has a fireplace and built in cook top, the other is an outdoor living room. Seat walls and pillars define the space and make it feel much more like a room than a patio. Pillars in this outdoor living space were faced with cultured stone to match the house, further integrating the architecture of the landscape with that of the home. Stamped concrete comes in a wide variety of colors and textures.
A blend of flagstone has been laid in concrete to create this patio. A smaller side patio extends to the base of this water feature. Our masons have years of experience in laying flagstone and do a beautiful job with nice tight joints, and selection of the most interesting pieces. This small front yard patio serves as a landing for a set of stairs. Mixing pavers with flagstone can create dramatic results. A large flagstone patio connects several entertaining areas in this landscape; a large scale fire feature, an outdoor kitchen, a large scale water feature and an area for dining. Flagstone is a durable and beautiful material. Much of it harvested here in the Four Corners Area is economical as well. An Autumn Blaze Maple shows its fall color in the foreground.
This simple built in grill head backs to a café patio integrating the upper patio with the cooking area. The seat walls on the patio double as additional prep area. The grand stone stair set leads to a large flagstone patio. One of the great aspects of flagstone is its diversity. Flagstone comes in a wide variety of colors and can be blended to create amazing results. This patio is a blend of three different types of flagstone. Integrating the inside and outside of the home is an important consideration. This client has a home office, so we installed a 12' wide window that overlooks this beautiful courtyard and water feature located directly across from the window. Seat walls are used in this courtyard to define the space and to add seating.
